A Closer Look at the 44 NCAA D1 Commits for 2016-17
Forty-four players who competed as part of the 2015-16 Tier 3 Junior Hockey season committed to play Division 1 Hockey for the 2016-17 season at 22 different universities. Although some made their commitment during their development in Tier 3, many committed while in High School and joined a Tier 3 team to further develop before beginning their college hockey careers.
The 2016-17 NCAA Division 1 Hockey season begins September 30, 2016. Not all rosters have been posted.

James Anderson committed to Mercyhurst University in early 2014 while in his first of 3 seasons with the PAL Jr. Islanders . The 5'10 179lb Forward will play for the Lakers in 2016-17
Brent Beaudoin, F, New Hampshire Jr Monarchs (EHL)
Brent Beaudoin committed to play college hockey at Brown University early in 2015 while playing on the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs roster. A Tier 3 veteran, Beaudoin developed for 5 seasons with the Monarchs from 2010-15 and competed with the Islanders Hockey Club during his 2015-16 campaign. Beaudoin will wear #13 for Brown this Fall.
Michael Booth, F, South Shore Kings (USPHL)
After 2 seasons in the USHL from 2012-14, Forward Michael Booth developed for one season with the Baystate Breakers in 2014-15 and then with the South Shore Kings during the 2015-16 season. Booth made his commitment to Boston College in February of 2016 after averaging nearly a point per game in a Kings jersey.
Connor Brassard, D, Jersey Hitmen (USPHL)
Defenseman Connor Brassard developed for 3 seasons at the Tier 3 level, one with the South Shore Kings and 2 on the Jersey Hitmen roster before making his commitment to play Division 1 hockey at Bentley University for the 2016-17 season.
Matthew Burchill, D, Bay State Breakers (USPHL)
Matthew Burchill committed to play college hockey at the United States Air Force Academy during his 2013-14 campaign on the Bay State Breakers roster. Burchill developed for 2 seasons with the Breakers, followed by 28 games in the BCHL and 13 games with the South Shore Kings in 2015-16.
Gabriel Chabot, F, Rochester Jr Americans (USPHL)
Although rostered as a Defenseman by the Rochester Jr Americans, Forward Gabriel Chabot earned 50 points through 44 games and earned himself a place on the Boston University Roster for 2016-17
Maximilien Daigle, D, Islanders HC (USPHL)
Max Daigle committed to play for the University of Vermont in early 2015 while in his first season of development with the Islanders Hockey Club . Daigle will join the Vermont roster this fall.
Austin Dittenhafer, D, Hartford Jr Wolfpack (EHL)
Austin Dittenhafer committed to play for the University of Vermont in the summer of 2014 while between seasons with the Hartford Jr Wolfpack of the EHL. Although technically an alumni, Dittenhafer is listed on the USPHL website as a commitment and played 1 game with the Junior Bruins early in the 2015-16 season.
Tim Doherty, F, Junior Bruins (USPHL)
Tim Doherty committed to play for Brown University in November of 2013 after a successful High School campaign at St George's and at the beginning of his 2013-14 season with the Junior Bruins. Set to play at Brown for the 2015-16 season, Doherty left school and returned to continue his development with the Bruins in a third season at the Tier 3 level. Doherty later committed to the University of Maine where he will don the #17 jersey for the Black Bears beginning with the 2016-17 season.
Joseph Duszak, D, PAL Jr Islanders (USPHL)
Although originally a 2017-18 Commitment, long time PAL Jr Islanders Joseph Duszak appears on the 2016-17 Mercyhurst roster. The 5'10 183lb Defenseman committed in the Fall of 2014 while in his second of four seasons with the Islanders. Duszak averaged over a point per game through 126 games on the teams Premier squad and earned a brief call up to the USHL in 2015-16.
Benjamin Freeman, F, Connecticut Jr. Rangers (USPHL)
Ben Freeman made his commitment to the University of Connecticut while playing 39 games with the Connecticut Jr Rangers through the 2015-16 season. Freeman's hockey resume also includes a short stint in the USHL with the Tri City Storm
Curtis Frye, G, Philadelphia Elite Flyers (USPHL)
Curtis Frye began his Tier 3 campaign in the 2013-14 season after a couple seasons on the US Development Team. The 6'4 194lb Goaltender played with the PAL Jr. Islanders , Jersey Hitmen and the USPHL Philadelphia Flyers. Frye committed to Northeastern University while with the Flyers and will wear the #31 jersey this fall for the Huskies.
Ron Greco, F, Philadelphia Flyers (USPHL)
Forward Ron Greco developed for 3 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers where he averaged a point per game during that span. Greco will play for the Boston College Eagles beginning this fall.
Clayton Han, D, Junior Bruins (USPHL)
Defenseman Clayton Han began his Tier 3 campaign with the Junior Bruins for the 2013-14 season, playing 134 regular season games with the team through 3 seasons and making his commitment to Dartmouth College along the way. The 5'11 180lb Defenseman will wear #23 for the Big Green this fall.
Justin Ketola, G, PAL Jr Islanders (USPHL)
Top 10 in Tier 3 Junior Hockey with 21 wins in the 2015-16 season, Justin Ketola made his commitment to American International College while playing for the PAL Jr. Islanders . Ketola also played a short stint for the Brookings Blizzard early in the 2014-15 season.
Cameron Klein, P.A.L. Jr. Islanders (USPHL)
Cameron Klein committed to the University of Vermont in March 2016 for the 2016-17 season. On July 20, 2016 it was announced Klein would be one of four Forwards to join the program.
Max Luukko, D, Philadelphia Flyers (USPHL)
Max Luukko played two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers from 2014-16, making his commitment to Sacred Heart University at the end of his 2015-16 campaign.
Nick Marin, F, Springfield Pics (USPHL)
Nick Marin began his Tier 3 campaign with the New England Wolves, playing two seasons from 2013-15 before continuing his development with the Springfield Jr Pics through the 2015-16 season. Marin made his commitment to the University of Massachusetts Lowell earlier this year.
Corey Moriarty, D, Junior Bruins (USPHL)
Corey Moriarty committed to the University of Vermont in the fall of 2015 while playing for the Junior Bruins. The 5'11 181lb Defenseman will join the Vermont roster for 2016-17.
Stephen Mundinger, G, New York Aviators (NA3EHL)
Goaltender Stephen Mundinger committed to play NCAA D1 hockey for the University of Maine in March of 2016 becoming the first and only player of the former NA3EHL to make a Division 1 commitment. The 6'8 238lb New York native will don the #33 Jersey for the Black Bears this Fall.
Bryan Nelson, D, Walpole Express (EHL)
Bryan Nelson made his commitment to the University of Connecticut late in the 2014-15 season while in his second season on the Walpole Express roster. Nelson began his 2015-16 campaign in the BCHL and finished the season with 11 games for the CT Jr Rangers.
John Picking, F, Boston Junior Bruins (USPHL)
John Picking played 3 seasons at the Tier 3 level on the Junior Bruins roster, making his commitment to Northeastern University in January of 2016. The 5'9 170lb Forward will wear the #7 jersey for the Huskies in 2016-17.
Chayse Primeau, F, Philadelphia Revolution (EHL)
Chayse Primeau committed to play Division 1 hockey for Canisius College in the summer of 2015 while in between seasons with the Philadelphia Revolution. The 6'3 170lb Forward is set to join the Golden Griffins for the Fall of 2016.
Tanner Salsberry, D, Jersey Hitmen (USPHL)
Tanner Salsberry played 2 seasons in the NAHL prior to joining the Jersey Hitmen roster for the 2015-16 season. The 6'2 196lb Defenseman committed to play college hockey for Bentley University while in a Hitmen Jersey.
Anthony Tirabassi, G, Islanders HC (USPHL)
Anthony Tirabassi committed to play for the College of the Holy Cross early in 2016 while playing his second season with the Islanders Hockey Club . The 5'10 174lb Goaltender will don the #34 jersey for the Crusaders this fall.
Billy Vizzo, F, PAL Jr Islanders (USPHL)
Forward Billy Vizzo played 3 seasons at the Tier 3 level, with the last two on the PAL Jr Islanders roster. The 5'11 185lb Connecticut native committed to play for American International College earlier this year.
Alex Wilkinson, D, CT Oilers (EHL)
Alex Wilkinson developed for three seasons with the Connecticut Oilers, making his commitment to play for Army West Point along the way. The 5'9 179lb Defenseman will join the Cadets for the 2016-17 season.

William Brophy, Defense
William Brophy committed to play NCAA D1 Hockey for the College of the Holy Cross for the 2016-17 season while playing High School hockey at Westminster Prep. Brophy furthered his development by playing a season with the Islanders HC in 2015-16. The 6'4 205lb Defenseman will don the #8 jersey for the Crusaders this fall.
Ace Cowans, Forward
Ace Cowans committed to play at the University of Vermont in the fall of 2014 while playing at Groton High School. Cowans continued his development through his 2015-16 campaign with the Islanders Hockey Club and will join the Vermont roster for the 2016-17 season.
John DeRoche, F, Junior Bruins (USPHL)
John DeRoche committed to play Division 1 hockey for Quinnipiac University in October of 2013 while playing on the Junior Bruins U16 squad. DeRoche played as part of the Bruins organization until advancing to the USHL during the 2015-16 season where he played 39 games for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders.
Matthew O'Donnell, Defense
Matthew O'Donnell committed to play at the University of Vermont in the Fall of 2013 while playing High School hockey. After playing 50 games in the USHL during his 2014-15 campaign, O'Donnell joined the Hitmen to continue his development through the 2015-16 season. It was announced on July 20, 2016 that O'Donnell will be one of four incoming Defensemen to join the Vermont roster.
Pat O'Leary, Defense
Pat O'Leary committed to play for the College of the Holy Cross for the 2016-17 season while on the Boston Junior Bruins U18 squad. O'Leary advanced to play on the Bruins Premier team and continued his development at the Tier 3 level for the 2015-16 season. O'Leary will wear the #2 jersey with the Crusaders this fall.
Owen Powers, Forward
Owen Powers committed to play Division 1 Hockey for the College of the Holy Cross for the 2016-17 season while playing High School hockey with Choate Rosemary Hall. Powers followed up his High School campaign with two seasons at the Tier 3 level on the Islanders Hockey Club roster. Powers will wear the #19 jersey for the Crusaders this fall.
Brendan Soucie, Forward
Brendan Soucie committed to play hockey for Army West Point in the Fall of 2013 while at Kent High School. Soucie began his 2014-15 campaign in the NAHL before transferring to the Bay State Breakers for the remainder of the season. Soucie continued his development through the 2015-16 season on the Islanders Hockey Club roster. He will join the Cadets this fall.
Brendan Van Riemsdyk, Forward
Brendan Van Riemsdyk committed to play Division 1 Hockey at the University of New Hampshire in the fall of 2012 while in High School and playing for the New Jersey Devils U16 squad. In 2014 Van Riemsdyk began his Tier 3 campaign with the Islanders Hockey Club where he developed for two seasons. Van Riemsdyk will play for the Wildcats this Fall.
Alex Whelan, Forward
Alex Whelan committed to play college hockey at Quinnipiac University during his 2013-14 campaign where he split time between Ramsey High School and the Jersey Hitmen U16 squad. Whelan continued to play both for his High School and the Hitmen U18 squad through the 2014-15 season. As a member of the Hitmen Premier team in 2015-16, Whelan logged 53 points in 44 regular season games.
Committed - Did not make NCAA D1 roster
Mark Bowen, Forward
Mark Bowen committed to play Division 1 hockey for Mercyhurst University in the Fall of 2013 while at Canterbury High School. After a breif stint in the NAHL, Bowen joined the CT Jr Rangers where he played 23 games in 2014-15 and 25 games in 2015-16 before transferring to the Jersey Wildcats for the remainder of the season. The Lakers 2016-17 roster has been posted and as of the writing of this article Bowen's name is not on it.
Liam Darcy, Defense
Liam Darcy committed to play for the University of New Hampshire Mens Hockey program for the 2016-17 season while playing High School hockey at Berwick Academy back in 2012. Following his High School campaign, Darcy continued his development through the 2015-16 season at the Tier 3 Junior Hockey level on the Islanders Hockey Club roster. New Hampshire released their 2016-17 roster and Liam Darcy is not on it.
Carlos Fornaris, Connecticut Jr Rangers (USPHL)
After playing his 2014-15 campaign on the Topeka Roadrunners (NAHL) roster, Carlos Fornaris was among the potential Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute recruits for the 2015-16 season, but his arrival was delayed until 2016. Fornaris started the 2015-16 season with 29 games on the Roadrunners roster before transferring to the CT Jr Rangers to finish out the season, ultimately committing to play for New England College NCAA D3 for 2016-17.
Charlie Kelleher, Forward
Forward Charlie Kelleher committed to play Division 1 hockey for the University of New Hampshire back in the summer 2012 between his Longmeadow High School season and his U16 season with the Junior Bruins midget squad. Kelleher continued his development with the Bruins for a total of 5 seasons, with his 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns at the Tier 3 level. New Hampshire released their 2016-17 roster and Charlie Kelleher is not on it.
David Melaragni, Defense
David Melaragni committed to play college hockey for Northeastern University while playing youth hockey during the 2012-13 season. Melaragni began his Tier 3 campaign in 2014, playing two seasons at the Tier 3 level with both the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia Revolution. The Northeastern 2016-17 roster has been posted. Melaragni is not on it.
Nick Olczyk, Forward
Forward Nick Olczyk committed to play hockey for Colorado College during his 2014-15 season while playing for the Waterloo Blackhawks in the USHL. In 2015-16 Olczyk continued his development as part of the South Shore Kings roster. Colorado College released their 2016-17 roster. Olczyk is not on in. He has one year of junior eligibility remaining.
Mike Robinson, G, Boston Jr Rangers (EHL)
Goaltender Mike Robinson made his commitment to the University of New Hampshire in the Summer of 2014, between seasons with the Boston Jr Rangers. The 6'3 194 pounder was taken in the 3rd round of the 2015 NHL draft #86 overall by the San Jose Sharks before going on to play his 2015-16 season with the Boston Junior Bruins. New Hampshire released their 2016-17 roster and Robinson's name is not on it.
Lukas Samuelsson, F, Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL)
Although listed on the USPHL website as a commit for the 2016-17 season, it appears Lukas Sameulsson will actually be a 2017-18 commit, with a year of junior eligibility remaining he committed to the University of Michigan in March of 2016.
Eduards Tralmaks, F, Boston Bandits (EHL)
Eduards Tralmaks committed to play hockey for the University of Maine for the 2016-17 season earlier this season while playing for the Boston Bandits. A 1997, Tralmaks incoming date has been moved to 2017-18.
