Tier 3 Junior Hockey Top 10 Fastest Goals
The first Goal of the 2015-16 Tier 3 Junior Hockey Season found the net on Saturday September 5th off the stick of Wooster Oilers Tyler Houmard off a feed from Oilers veteran Brandon Scholze at 19:06 in the first period of the Oilers first game in the NA3HL. At :54 seconds, this goal remained one of the top ten fastest goals for a couple weeks. Three months later and the goals are much faster.
To date, the fastest goal was logged on October 17, 2015 by Philadelphia Flyers Premier Defenseman Rich Brusco at 5 seconds from the start of the game. The goal was the second on the season for the 5'8 150lb New Jersey native.
Six days later, Eugene Generals Forward Dustin Gomez found the net at 6 seconds in his first of two goals on the night in the Generals 10-2 victory over the Tri City Outlaws. The goal was the third on the season for the 5'11 155 lb Tier 3 veteran who has since logged 4 more.
Tier 3 points leader, Jared Karas of the Jersey Shore Wildcats earned the next fastest goal at 8 seconds into the Wildcats 4-0 shutout over the Syracuse Stampede on November 22nd. A 1995, Karas averages nearly a goal a game, logging 26 goals in 27 games and a Tier 3 high 62 points on the season.
On October 31st, South Shore Kings Elite Forward Zachary Dragun found the net 9 seconds into the Kings 2-5 loss to the Rochester Jr Americans. The goal was the 5th of 11 goals on the season for the 5'9 170lb Massachusetts native.
Equally as fast, Valley Jr Warriors Elite Forward Brendan Hussey also found the net after 9 seconds just seven days earlier in the Warriors 5-4 victory over the Vermont Lumberjacks. The goal was the 5th of 12 goals on the season for Hussey, a 1996 Massachusetts native.
On October 10th Philadelphia Revolution Forward PJ Breslow found the net at 11 seconds which at the time was the fastest Tier 3 goal recorded on the season. The record held until Rich Brusco's 5 second goal took over a week later. A 1998, Breslow earned 9 goals and 8 assists through his first 21 games with the Revolution. The same evening Jr Pirates Elite Forward Andrew Bobynskyj found the net 14 seconds into the start of his first of 2 games for the Pirates Premier squad.
On November 15th, two top 10 fastest goals were scored, the first at 13 seconds by Junior Pirates Elite forward Alex Kielczewski and the second at 15 seconds by Palm Beach Hawks Elite Forward Tyler Strutz. Kielczewski has 9 goals and 7 assists through his first 17 games this season and Strutz logged 14 goals through 26 games for the Hawks.
Marks Mezsargs found the net at 14 seconds on October 30th for the now 24-1-1 Tri City Icehawks. A 1997 Latvian player, the goal marked the 4th on the season for Mezsargs who has 8 goals and 17 assists through 26 games.
If you're curious, the fastest goal in NHL history is also 5 seconds. The record is held by multiple players: Doug Smail of the Winnipeg Jets on December 20, 1981. Bryan John Trottier of the New York Islanders on March 22, 1984 and Alexander Mogilny of the Buffalo Sabers on December 21, 1991.
