Drafted in the 4th round of the 1989 NHL draft, 72nd overall to the Philadelphia Flyers, Simpson went on to play 12 seasons in the NHL for the Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Tampa Bay Lightning, St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Simpson logged his first NHL goal during his 1995-96 campaign with the New Jersey Devils and went on to earn 18 goals and 18 assists over the course of his NHL career.
Simpson played on the Chicago Blackhawks roster for two seasons from 1997-99, earning 8 goals and 6 assists through that span. Simpson played his final NHL game during the 2003-04 season with 2 games on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster before completing the season with the Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL. Simpson continued to play in the UHL, AHL and Russia through the 2006-07 season. He came back for 14 games with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL during the 2009-10 season before retiring.
Prior to the 2012-13 season, Simpson joined the Illiana Blackbirds organization as GM and Head Coach. Then part of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League the Blackbirds earned a 92-34-9 regular season record from 2012-15, finishing no worse than 2nd in their division through that span. The Blackbirds joined the USPHL Midwest division prior to the 2015-16 season.
