The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an annual award for the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. First awarded in the 1967-68 season, the award is named after Bill Masterton (Minnesota North Stars) who died on January 15, 1968, becoming the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries occurred in a game.
