Blaine Energy Win 4 at the USPHL Midwest Showcase
With nearly three months between wins to start the season, the Blaine Energy battled injury and illness, but have since won 5 of their last eight games, including all four games at the USPHL Midwest Showcase.
"We are focused now," says Head Coach Chad Ballard "the systems are starting to click with all the boys"
The Energy played two games on Friday, the first a 5-4 shootout victory over the Detroit Fighting Irish and the first win of the season for goaltender Drew Pehrson. Pehrson turned away 40 of the 44 shots faced in the win and is now 1-1 in net for Blaine. Tier 3 veteran Parker Caskey led the team with 3 points in the contest.
Later that day Blaine defeated the Marquette Royales 5-2 with go to goaltender Blair Sanders between the pipes. The win was the third for Sanders who holds the honor of having the most saves on the season across all Tier 3. With 1433 saves Sanders has nearly 500 more than any other goaltender in the country. Second year forward Jamison Bach had statistically his best game of the season, logging 2 goals and 2 assists.
Blair Sanders earned his 2nd win on the weekend on Saturday in the Energy's 4-1 victory over the Alpena Flyers, turning away 39 of 40 shots faced. Jake Steiner, Nate Kuta, Jacob Kantor and Parker Caskey each logged a goal for Blaine. The goal was the 6th on the season for Steiner.
In their 4th game on the weekend, the Energy scored their highest number of goals this season with an 8-2 victory over the Michigan Wild on Sunday. Goaltender Sigurd Vaula turned away 19 of 21 shots faced to earn his first win in an Energy jersey. A native of Norway, Sigurd came to the Energy after a short stint in the WSHL last season. Both Nate Kuta and Jacob Kantor earned 6 points on the night and Parker Caskey added 4 assists.
"We are very excited to keep this winning streak going and take it one game at a time," said Ballard "We are hoping to catch up to the Blaze and the Blades in the next games to come!"
The Energy have two games against division rival Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings on January 2nd and 3rd, followed by 4 games January 8-10 at a second USPHL Showcase where they'll face the Potomac Patriots, Florida Jr Blades, Frederick Freeze and Palm Beach Hawks. The teams next home game is January 15th at the Fogerty Ice Arena in Blaine MN
