Signature Win for the Decatur Blaze
For most of the 2015-16 season the USPHL Midwest Western Conference has been led by the 24-3-1 Dells Ducks. Last night the 8th place Decatur Blaze took game one of a three game series 3-2 over the Ducks in overtime. A team who previously outscored the Blaze 21-2 through 3 matchups.
Early in the third period the Ducks went up 2-0 on the Blaze, but two mid period goals from Ryan Redpath and Justin Davis tied things up for the Blaze and they would ultimately defeat the Ducks in a shootout. Decatur is a team that plays the full 60 minutes, putting up 46% of their season goals in the 3rd period/Overtime. In fact, the Blaze are undefeated in games needing extra time, winning 3 matchups in OT. An impressive feat for a team thats 7-19-0 overall and 5-17-0 in their division.
The top offensive contributors for the Blaze include Tier 3 Veteran Forward Zach Schingoethe, a 5'9 225lb Illinois native who played his 2014-15 campaign with the former Ironwood Fighting Yoopers. With 13 goals and 11 assists, including 2 game winners, Schingoethe played a part in 30% of the teams goals this season.
Micah Young, a 1995, is in his third season with the organization and responsible in part for over 27% of the teams goals.
Second year Forward Ryan Redpath earned a point in 14 of 18 games this season for the Blaze.
