Tier 3 Junior Hockey Alumni Watch | University of Maine
37% of the 2016-17 University of Maine roster developed at the Tier 3 level
The University of Maine Men's Hockey team added nine Freshman to their 2016-17 roster, three of those players competed at the Tier 3 Junior Hockey level as part of their development. The incoming Tier 3 alumni will join six former Tier 3 players who already wear Black Bears jersey's.
The three Freshman are Goaltender Stephen Mundinger, Forward Tim Doherty and Defenseman Stephen Cochrane. The 6'8 210lb Mundinger will be one of three goalies on the Black Bears roster in 2016-17, all of which developed at the Tier 3 level. The 2015-16 NA3EHL Goaltender of the Year earned a 24-8-4 record including 2 shutouts for the New York Aviators (now Long Beach Sharks). Mundingers 24 wins ranked 5th among all 463 Tier 3 goalies to compete in the 2015-16 season as he turned away 1343 shots, second only to Blaine Energy goalie Blair Sanders.
Forward Tim Doherty originally committed to play for Brown University for the 2015-16 season but left school and returned to continue his development with the Boston Junior Bruins where he averaged nearly 1.2 points per game over 116 games. It was in his third season with the Bruins that he committed to Maine.
Red Shirt Freshman Stephen Cochrane committed to the Black Bears for the 2015-16 season after playing 49 games with the Bay state Breakers through his 2014-15 campaign. The 6'6 225lb Massachusetts native is the only former Tier 3 defenseman on the Maine roster.
Returning to the Maine roster is Sophomore Goaltender Rob McGovern (Bay State Breakers/2014-15) who earned a .905 save percent through 19 games between the pipes last season and Redshirt Junior Goaltender Matt Morris (New Jersey Hitmen/2009-10 ) who earned a .901 save percent through 19gp.
Also returning are four Forwards including Junior Nolan Vesey (South Shore Kings/2013-14) who was taken #158 in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sophomore Daniel Perez (Wilkes Barre Scranton Knights/2013-15), Sophomore Brendan Robbins (Islanders HC/2012-15) and Senior Cam Brown (New Hampshire Jr Monarchs/2010-12).
Both Conor Riley (Valley Jr Warriors) and Steven Swaverly (New Jersey Hitmen) graduated following the 2015-16 season. Swaverly advanced to play professional hockey with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL for 2016-17.
Three former Tier 3 players who were on the Maine roster in 2015-16 will not be returning this coming season: Jack Musil (New England Wolves), Andrew Tegeler (Junior Bruins) and Brian Morgan (New Hampshire Jr Monarchs). Morgan is listed as a commit for the University of Connecticut for this Fall.
The Black Bears finished 11th of 12 in the Hockey East Conference in 2015-16 after going 5-15-2 in conference play.
