A Breakdown of Tier 3 Junior Hockey Players by Birth State
State of Hockey Registers only 6% of Tier 3 Junior Hockey Players
According to recent numbers listed on *Quanthockey, 16.4% of all US Born players in the NHL this season were born in Minnesota, with the State of Hockey coming in just shy of Michigan and its 16.9% of US born players playing at the highest level.
**Minnesotahockey recently reported 42 Minnesota Born Goaltenders playing in NCAA D1 and D3 programs. That's 42 Goalies from Minnesota in just over 130 programs.
***USAHockey has yet to release a 2015-16 membership report, but their 2014-15 numbers show Minnesota leading all other states in America by thousands.
So why were there only 6% Minnesota born players playing at the Tier 3 level this season? A state that has the most USA Hockey members, a respectable presence in the NHL, a large number of players on NCAA hockey rosters, a state whose high school numbers rival all others, a state with 10 Tier 3 teams: A state that is aptly named the State of Hockey. In fact more imported players competed as part of Tier 3 this season than players hailing from Minnesota.
The NA3HL has 6 teams in Minnesota and as a league roster over 150 players from the state, accounting for 19% of all their registered players with Michigan coming in 2nd with 13%.
The USPHL hosts 4 teams in the State of Minnesota and as a league with over 1300 players only register 4% born in Minnesota. The remaining Tier 3 Leagues each register 1% or less players hailing from the State of Hockey, although none of them field teams in Minnesota.
New York State easily leads the way with 11% of all Tier 3 players hailing from the great state and does host more teams than any other with 13 organizations fielding teams and many with multiple Tier 3 squads.
So here's a breakdown of where the majority of Tier 3 player hail from
EHL - 50% of players come from 4 states or internationally imported players including Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and New Jersey.
MJHL - 91% of all players hailed from 4 states - New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
NA3EHL - 53% of all players came from three states - New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
NA3HL - 53% of all players came from 4 states or are internationally imported players - including Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.
NPHL - 48% of all players came from the state of Washington with an additional 12% hailing from Alaska
RMJHL - 54% of all players came from the state of Colorado.
USPHL - 54% of players came from 5 states or are Internationally imported players - including Michigan, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey and New York.
By the Numbers - 19 States combine for 92% of all players
New York 11%
New Jersey 9%
Imported Players 7%
New Hampshire 2%
North Carolina 2%
All other 31 states accounted individually for less than 1% of Tier 3 Hockey players this season and a combined 8% with all States represented except for Arkansas.
